Course Completion Time-Line

This Course is to be completed in four weeks. It begins on the first Monday of each month, and continues for four full weeks. Follow the schedule and you will finish on time!

IMPORTANT COURSE EXTENSION INFORMATION - This Accelerated Online Course is designed to be completed in four weeks. Extending completion time beyond four weeks will usually work against your good efforts. However, if due to unforeseen circumstances an extension is needed, you may request one of two extensions:

  • $25 for a two-week course extension (gives you a total of six weeks to complete the course).
  • $35 for a three-week course extension (gives you a total of seven weeks to complete the course).
  • Use the contact form to request an extension.

No extension may be granted for more than an additional three weeks. If after a three-week extension you have not completed the course, you will be dropped from the course, but offered the following three options:

  • Complete the course using the Standard Directed Study method at no additional cost.
  • Complete the course using the optional Online Seminar Course method at no additional cost.
  • Wait a minimum of three months, and return to the Accelerated Online Course. This option requires a $100 reinstatement fee.

REFUND POLICY: Course fees are nonrefundable.

IMPORTANT - Read ReadMe Items 1-4 BEFORE you begin your first assignment for Week-One.

ReadMe Item 1

GENERAL INFORMATION ON CREATING COURSE COMPONENT SUBMISSIONS:  Put your name, student number, degree level, and course name in the "Properties" section of your course file. To find the "Properties" box for your file (this may be different for your word processing program), click on "File" at the top left of your word processor. Next, select "Properties" and key in the required information. This will permanently identify your document. You may select any recognized writing style you prefer (A.P.A., M.L.A., Chicago/Turabian).  You may also use only the basic rules of English composition and grammar.  However, you must be consistent in your style selection.

IMPORTANT:  Be careful to follow the proper rules for references and footnotes.  If you use one of the recognized writing styles (A.P.A., M.L.A., Chicago/Turabian), you should follow the footnote and reference method for that particular style.  If you use only the basic rules of English composition and grammar, you will still need to follow proper conventions for footnotes and references.

Most word processing software has enhanced features that make footnotes and references easier and even automatic.  If you are not familiar with these word-processing enhancements, you will need to take the time to learn.  It is not difficult, and the savings in time is well worth the effort.  HINT:  You can do an online search for how to do footnotes and references for your particular word processing program (such as MS Word).

Courses not sent according to the proper submission requirements may be returned for proper compliance. PLEASE understand that with thousands of lessons sent each year; this requirement is a matter of high importance and self-preservation for both you and our staff. Thank you for your understanding.

When you send your lesson as a file transfer, use the course number followed by your first, middle (if you have a middle name), and last initials as the name for the file. For example: Let us say you are completing the course "New Testament Theology NTH-1500-AOC." In this example, a course from, let us say, student Steve L. Pack, should have a file name of NTH1500AOCSLP.rtf (if it were saved as an RTF file), or NTH1500AOCSLP.doc or  NTH1500AOCSLP.docx if it is a Word document. The point is that the course number is followed by the initials of your name. In order to be sure that your faculty member knows that the work on your lesson has actually ended, you must place the following statement on the last line of the last page of your component submission: This is the last page of this submission.

Assignments for this course must be completed in a Microsoft Word-compatible document (.doc, .docx, .txt or .rtf).  Save this document by giving it a file name using the course number for this course (see the top of this web page), followed by the initials of your name.  BACK UP YOUR FILE OFTEN AS YOU PROCEED.

This course will require that you create only two such documents.  Assignments for weeks 1 & 2 will be sent as a single file - that will be Component One.  Assignments for weeks 3 & 4 will be sent as a single fine - that will be Component Two.  You will be instructed when and how to send these two Components.

The first page of both documents must contain the following information.  Use the illustration below (it can be copied, and pasted into your course document).

An important note about watching the video lectures.

For most video lectures we use GoToTraining to serve the video lectures for AOC courses.  The following instructions apply ONLY to that service.  Other video lectures are provided in YouTube format in which case you need only click the link to watch.  Most lectures are about one hour in length with a maximum of two hours in some cases.  When you click the video link, you will be taken to a registration page.  There you may (or may not) notice in the upper left side a list of session dates and times.  Ignore them as they do not apply to you.  You will be asked to register by putting in your name and email address and then clicking to complete the registration.  As soon as you do this, the video lecture should begin playing on your computer.

However, Adobe Flash or Shockwave Player must be installed and up-to-date.  If it is not, a notice will appear giving you an opportunity to install it.  Do so at that time.  It will only take a moment.  This is a free service and is completely safe.  At the same time, a message will be sent to your email address confirming that you are registered, and providing a link to the lecture.  Save that email, and you can watch the lecture as often as you like without needing to re-register.  If you have difficulty watching any of the video lectures, please use the contact form to request assistance.

ReadMe Item 4

UNDERSTANDING YOUR READING STYLE - As a seasoned adult learner, you have already developed your own reading style.  This short article is not about encouraging you to change your style, but to understand it a bit better. This is important because Accelerated Online Courses' success depends on structured and disciplined reading.

Though you already have the reading skills required for the successful completion of this course, in some cases you may need to discipline your reading more carefully.  If English is not your first language, you may also need to devote more time to your reading than might otherwise be required.

It is in the interest of helping you to understand better your acquired reading style we offer the following article excerpt.

Types of reading - Types of reading greatly affect the speed of reading. Each of us is wired differently from environmental influences. Many have learned to read word by word from grade school, and have never been taught or informed the need to improve upon that method. When reading word by word, our eyes often skip back to a previous word or line; we might also fixate on a single word even after it has been read. These mechanical issues slow us down while reading and comprehending.

There are [essentially] 3 types of reading:

1.  Mental reading (subvocalization): sounding out each word internally, as reading to yourself. This is the slowest form of reading.

2.  Auditory reading: hearing [speaking]out the read words. This is a faster process.

3.  Visual reading: understanding the meaning of the word[s], rather than sounding or hearing. This is the fastest process.

Mental readers generally read at approximately 250 words per minute. Auditory readers read at approximately 450 words per minute. Visual readers read at approximately 700 words per minute. Visual reading is a skill that can be developed through continuous training and practice. 1
